The ACT Department of Education and Training is responsible for all 31 schools
across the Australian Capital Territory. It provides local students
with the opportunity to experience a diverse array of language
and cultural experiences with international students from 18 countries.
Canberra is one of the few places in Australia where international students are
accepted into primary schools. Students aged between 5 and 11 years
attend primary school. High schools cater for students aged 12
to 16 in years 7 to 10 and students' complete years 11 and 12 in
separate schools called secondary colleges.
The secondary college system is unique in Australia and was designed as a transition
from the structure of high school to the freedom of university
or the world of work. The timetable resembles that of a university
and student assessment is on a continuous basis over two years.
There are no large public examinations at the end of year 12 for
university entrance.
High quality support is provided for all international students. In each school
there is a teacher responsible for the day-to-day welfare of each
student. Students are provided with advice about subject choice,
university entrance and multilingual departmental officers are
available 24 hours per day for students and their parents. |
